entp.com, new consultancy, launches
Courtenay : January 30th, 2008
I’ve been working in the same office as ActiveReload for several months now, and from that it only seems natural that we combine forces sooner or later.
After reading Lucky or Smart by Bo Peabody, I realized that I needed to find a way of, as he says, getting the smartest people I know in the same room, and letting them do their thing, because it will result in something amazing.
For Rick and Justin, running the business side of ActiveReload was getting in the way of programming; their applications were starting to be neglected. With this new structure, they’ll be able to focus on the code and the art. I’ve been hiring additional support staff, so that none of us are dragged away from the things at which we excel.
We’re calling ourselves a ‘web incubator’ – we’re still doing Rails-based consulting, but we will also be building more of the same types of applications that ActiveReload have become known for. We’re structuring it more in the style of a collective.
It doesn’t stop at ActiveReload; in fact, I’ve been hiring all smart people I can get my hands on – at least, the ones that Engine Yard haven’t noticed yet – including caboose favorites, the indomitable Matt “Mattly” Lyon and the outspoken Trevor “Protocool” Squires.
So what’s next?
We’re still open for consulting, of course; you won’t find anyone with a better knowledge of Rails and Prototype. We’re moving into the training space, with the help of some people you already know and love. Look forward to some exciting developments, and here’s to the future!
The new venture is called entp.com.

I have to ask - is the name a nod to the Myers-Briggs?
Good luck!

Ben: More than a nod I'm sure :-)
How damn common is it to be an ENTP in Rails? I used to think I was unique...
Congrats with the very practical business move!

Pfft, as an INTJ I'm going to say ENTPs are not /all/ the smartest ;-) You are just the charming, charismatic do-ers who make money froom all the things us "IJ" hermits create in our sad little worlds g
Seriously though, good luck!

Oops, I made a boo-boo. I'm an INTP. So we're more alike than it seems. I'm still a hermit though.

Peter: INTP here, too - we are the Architects of ... stuff!

If it's not too indelicate to ask, how are you affording to hire many high quality people up front? Do you already have clients signed up and ready to be billed or is it a leap of faith?
I'm always intrigued at how companies grow from one or two people to a few more.

The Council of American Builders might have been more appropriate.
